| The challenges of modern manufacturing |
| Manufacturing is being buffeted by critical challenges being thrown at it. At the top level, they face Marketing Challenges - consumers seeking greater range of choice, time-to-market pressures and new product innovations for competitive benefit. Then, they face Management Challenges in that there is poor visibility and control over the design and manufacturing activity and inadequate employee focus. Further, there are Resource Challenges in the poor definition and control of the flow of material throughout the plants, material misallocation / reallocation, poor work instructions, tooling inadequacies and misallocation of tasks. To top that all, there are Technical Challenges - lack of proper tools to capture Best Practices, lack of integration between different productivity tools and improper/slow deployment of tools. Finally, there are Logistical Challenges in lack of an adequate system to coordinate efforts and optimize the workflow between all actors in the manufacturing sphere - manager, engineer, supplier and operatives. |
